Learning to Pause:

Why Rest Is Part of Healing

By Dr. Tara J. Snow

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28

A woman sitting on a gray sofa with her hands clasped on her knee. She has shoulder-length hair and is wearing a black patterned dress and brown sandals. A dog wearing a blue and white striped outfit is lying on the floor in front of her. The room has a modern and minimalist decor, with abstract artwork hanging on the wall, and a white armchair with pillows in the background.

Why Rest Matters?

As a Christian counselor, I've had the privilege of walking alongside people facing anxiety, grief, trauma, addiction, burnout, relationship struggles, and life's unexpected challenges.

One thing many of these experiences have in common is prolonged stress.

Stress isn't always the enemy. In short bursts, it's actually helpful. It prepares us to respond to challenges and keeps us alert in dangerous situations.

The problem arises when stress never turns off.

Our bodies aren't designed to stay in "survival mode" indefinitely.

Without healthy periods of rest, we may begin to experience:

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Irritability

  • Anxiety

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Physical exhaustion

  • Frequent headaches

  • Muscle tension

  • Emotional numbness

  • Increased conflict in relationships

Sometimes we think something is "wrong" with us, when in reality, our mind and body are simply asking for rest.

What Happens in the Brain?

When we experience ongoing stress, our brain releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These chemicals are incredibly helpful during emergencies, but when they remain elevated for long periods, they can affect our ability to think clearly, regulate emotions, and feel at peace.

Over time, chronic stress may contribute to:

  • Increased anxiety

  • Difficulty making decisions

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

  • Problems with memory and focus

  • Physical fatigue

  • Greater risk of depression and burnout

The good news?

Our brains are remarkably resilient.

Healthy rest helps regulate these stress responses and gives both our minds and bodies an opportunity to recover.

Rest Is More Than Sleep

When people hear the word rest, they often think of sleep.

Sleep is important, but true rest involves so much more.

Healthy rest can look like:

  • Spending quiet time in prayer

  • Reading Scripture

  • Taking a walk outdoors

  • Sitting beside a lake

  • Enjoying a hobby

  • Laughing with friends

  • Journaling

  • Turning off your phone for an hour

  • Listening to worship music

  • Sitting quietly with a cup of coffee

Rest isn't about doing nothing.

It's about doing what restores you.

Jesus Modeled Rest

One of the things I love most about Scripture is that Jesus never rushed from one miracle to the next.

Even while people were waiting for Him...

Even while needs surrounded Him...

Even while crowds followed Him...

Jesus intentionally stepped away.

Luke 5:16 tells us,

"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."

If the Son of God made time to rest, pray, and reconnect with the Father...

Perhaps we should too.

Rest isn't a sign of weakness.

It's an act of wisdom.

Practical Ways to Prevent Burnout

You don't need a week-long vacation to begin caring for yourself.

Sometimes healing begins with small, consistent choices.

This week, consider trying one or two of these:

✔ Take a 15-minute walk without your phone.

✔ Drink enough water throughout the day.

✔ Spend five quiet minutes in prayer.

✔ Go to bed thirty minutes earlier.

✔ Say "no" to one unnecessary commitment.

✔ Read a chapter of a book that encourages you.

✔ Spend time with someone who fills your heart instead of draining it.

✔ Step outside and notice God's creation.

Small moments of restoration add up over time

Have You Ever Felt Guilty for Resting?

If you're like many people I meet, the answer is probably yes.

We live in a world that celebrates busyness. Our calendars are full, our phones rarely stop buzzing, and many of us wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. We tell ourselves things like:

"I'll rest when this project is finished."

"I'll slow down after the kids are older."

"I just need to push through one more week."

Before we know it, weeks become months, and months become years. We become so accustomed to running that we forget what it feels like to simply be still.

But here's the truth:

Your mind, your body, and your spirit were never designed to live in a constant state of stress.

Rest isn't a luxury.

It's a necessity.

A Personal Reflection

This past year has reminded me how important it is to slow down.

Like many of you, I've walked through seasons I never expected—seasons that required me to stop, heal, and trust God in ways I hadn't before.

As someone who genuinely loves helping others, I understand the temptation to keep going even when you're running on empty.

But I've learned something valuable.

You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Taking care of yourself isn't selfish.

It's stewardship.

When we care for our own emotional, physical, and spiritual health, we're better equipped to love our families, serve our communities, and fulfill the purpose God has placed on our lives.

This Month's Challenge

Over the next seven days, give yourself permission to pause.

Not because everything on your to-do list is finished.

Not because you've "earned" it.

But because your heart, mind, and body were created with rhythms of work and rest.

Ask yourself:

What is one thing I can do this week that restores my soul?

Then make time for it.

You may be surprised how much lighter life feels.

Final Thoughts

Healing isn't measured by how busy you are.

It isn't determined by how much you accomplish in a day.

Healing often happens in the quiet moments—when we finally stop striving long enough to breathe, pray, reflect, and simply receive God's peace.

So if you needed permission to slow down today...

Consider this your permission.

Take the walk.

Drink the coffee.

Read the Scripture.

Call the friend.

Watch the sunset.

Pet your dog.

Rest.

Because healing isn't found in constantly doing more.

Sometimes...

Healing begins when we learn to pause.
